Don’t Shoot From the Hip: Owning Inexperience in a New Legal Role
An “after action report” lesson that young JAGs learn: don’t shoot from the hip, because a slightly delayed right answer is better than a quick wrong one. After years of confidence in military justice, they have moved into contract and fiscal law, where they have a degree but not the same depth of experience. In a cross-department meeting, despite having written a legal review beforehand, new facts were introduced and the group demanded an immediate answer on a highly technical, nuanced area of law. Feeling pressure, the speaker chose not to give a quick “yes” that might be wrong, instead stating they were not an expert, needed time to review the law under the new facts, and asked clarifying questions, emphasizing that “cheap comes out expensive.”

Excellence Isn’t Protection: Why Boundaries Make High Performance Sustainable
Reflecting on a lifelong belief that excellence—working harder, being disciplined, and always delivering—would protect her and guarantee good outcomes. She describes how academic and athletic success led to scholarships, law school achievements, selection for the JAG Corps, and strong reviews, reinforcing the idea that excellence works. Over time, she realizes excellence also creates expectations, turning competence into assumed capacity, leading to more work, blurred lines between trust and exploitation, and systems that avoid fixing underlying problems because the speaker keeps “saving the day.” When illness strikes, she finds she cannot outwork biology and must accept rest and limits, exposing how production became identity and how fear of saying no drove self-sacrifice. She concludes excellence cannot substitute for boundaries; boundaries make excellence sustainable and protect the person doing the work.

Why “Emergency” Requests Steal Your Best Work (and How to Respond) In this after-action report, I describe being interrupted mid-afternoon on a top-priority task by two separate “emergencies,” one via Teams and another via email requesting an office meeting. I contrast my younger self—who drops everything, works late, and ends up producing three lower-quality outputs—with my more experienced self, who asks follow-up questions, realizes neither issue is truly urgent, and schedules both for the next day because their plate is full. The core lesson isn’t about boundaries or simply saying no, but that under pressure systems default to “yes,” taking whatever isn’t refused; the only real limit is what you enforce, and the speaker’s former lack of limits came from fear rather than workload.
